Dec 04, 2010 Wed, 12082010 - 0254. I asked someone who has built furniture with plywood and they recommended sanding sealer. Fill any major gaps with wood putty, then sand. Then put on the sanding sealer, let dry for a couple of hours, then sand again. Then prime, paint and poly. I cant recommend this method as I havent done this before.
Nov 25, 2010 It depends on the type of plywood and what you are trying to do. Generally, if Im using a cabinet-grade plywood, I dont sand at all. If you are dealing with a sanded pine construction-grade plywood, I suppose you could give it a light go with 150 or finer. Its very easy to sand through the first layer.

Apr 30, 2012 Take a straight edge and clamp it to the top of the plywood sheet about 132 short of the edge. You can use clamps or double side tape. Shave the plywood edge with a router removing about 132 . You will have a perfect edge with no tear out and not rounded over. Sanding is a no no. A good blade is not needed but makes the job easier.

If you stay aware of what youre doing you wont blow through the outer veneer. Otherwise, it is just wood - very thin wood but wood.

Mar 26, 2014 For that type sanding a random orbital sander is a better choice. It has a harder pad on the bottom of it that will keep the sanding flat. Anyway look at the plywood on the edge and see how thick the outer veneer is before attempting to do that much sanding. You would probably need to sand a 132 off that side of the plywood to smooth those spots.
